There are a number of changes coming to the Autopac coverage offered by MPI in 2021. These changes will affect deductibles, Basic Third-Party Liability (TPL), and the Basic Maximum Insured Value.

You can read all of the changes on MPI’s upcoming coverage enhancements page. These changes will affect drivers on their insurance anniversary date, starting April 1st 2021. To make things simple for our clients, we’ve compiled a list of the changes here:

Deductible changes

Current deductible options Deductible options as of April 1st, 2021
Basic deductible: $500 Basic deductible: $750
$300 $500
$200 $300
$100 $200 Standard
$200 Plus

Prior to April 1st, 2021, the basic deductible was $500, with an option to reduce the deductible to $300, $200, or $100 for an additional premium.

MPI customers who chose the $200 or $100 deductible had their deductibles waived for theft, glass repair, collision with animals, and vandalism. Those with a $300 deductible have no deductible for glass repair or collision with animals.

As of April 1st, the basic deductible is increased to $750 – this deductible can be reduced if you increase your premium. You’ll note that in the table above, there is a $200 Standard or $200 Plus deductible. This is because the ways in which deductibles have been waived has changed. The changes are as follows:

Deductible/Coverage $300 $200 Standard $200 Plus
Collision with animal deductible waived? (Y/N) Y Y Y
Glass repair deductible waived? (Y/N) N N Y
Theft deductible waived? (Y/N) N Y Y
Vandalism deductible waived? (Y/N) N N Y

Note that this only applies to deductibles for passenger vehicles. The changes to deductibles for motorcycles and other vehicles are different.

When your renewal notice comes in, you’ll be automatically assigned to the deductible level that most closely matches your current deductible. This means that almost everyone will remain on the $500 deductible – you can increase this deductible to $750 if you want to stay on the “Basic” deductible. Customers currently on the $200 deductibles default to $200 Standard, while those on the $100 deductibles default to $200 Plus.

Increased Third-Party Liability

Good news – Basic TPL is increasing from $200,000 to $500,000. You’ll still be able to increase your TPL amounts, as well – to $1 million, $2 million, $5 million, $7 million, or $10 million.

Increased Basic Maximum Insured Value

The Basic Maximum Insured Value has increased from $50,000 to $70,000. You can still purchase Excess Value coverage if your vehicle needs to be insured for more. The Maximum Insured Value is the limit of how much you can be paid for loss or damage to your vehicle.

That covers all of the changes to coverage for passenger vehicles – of course, if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re experts on car insurance in Winnipeg
